Eco-Survey port project in London launched

DP World London Gateway has contracted Thomson to proceed to ecological monitoring surveys as part of its goal to ultimately develop a modern new port in the Thames estuary. Thomson will monitor wildlife, as reptiles, great crested and predatory fish in the ecological receptor sites which it installed when it first began working with DP World on the new development in 2008.

World’s first LNG icebreaker refuels in Finland

IB Polaris is the first icebreaker in the world to use an LNG engine and has bunkered  LNG at the Tornio LNG terminal in Röyttä Harbour. Polaris joined the fleet of Finland’s icebreaker operator Arctia in September 2016. Except the use of LNG, the lubricant used in the vessel's propulsion system is biodegradable. The ship’s gray water, which basically consists of showering water, is collected to a container which is emptied during port calls.

Watch: New Zealand’s Port of Newcastle joins EcoPorts

Port of Newcastle has become the first port in Australia or New Zealand to commit to meeting global environmental and sustainability standards as set by EcoPorts. The port was this month granted membership of the International EcoPorts network, having completed assessments to benchmark its environmental and sustainability practices against 120 major ports across Europe, Asia, North America and South America.
