Security Measures: Putting the ISPS Code into practice

According to the ISPS Code, it is a requirement for all vessels to have a Ship Security Plan (SSP) on board including all protective measures that the crew should apply at each security level. Also, SSP should demonstrate the restricted areas and provide guidelines for an effective implementation of the Code, with Risk Assessment forms and checklists to be used by key personnel during several activities on board.

Exposed surfaces with temperatures above 220ºC are a danger

In its latest issue of Safety Digest, UK MAIB highlights an incident concerning an engineer who was informed by the captain that the engine's exhaust temperature was higher than normal. Therefore, he went to the engine room to check. While losing his balance he placed both of his hands on an uninsulated section of the exhaust pipe. The engineer suffered crucial burns to his hands and was transferred ashore for hospital treatment.
