British oil major BP announced that it will leave three US-based organisations, following a review examining the alignment of their climate-related policies and activities with BP’s positions. This comes as BP unveiled ambition to become a net zero company by 2050, earlier this month. 

DNV GL recently defined three new technologies, concerning the energy transition. In fact, new battery storage chemistries, high-temperature heat pumps and green hydrogen have among others the potential to reduce CO2 emissions until 2030, as the company reported.

Many climate experts predict that the next ten years are crucial, thus our actions within this decade will decide whether we are able to reach the ambitious goals of the Paris agreement limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5°C until 2050. Yet, recent studies show that G20 nations are currently failing to reach their climate goals.

The decline in coal-fired power, together with the rise in renewable energy leads to the cleanest energy year on record for the UK. For the first time, the amount of zero carbon electricity used by the UK’s homes and businesses surpassed that from fossil fuels for a full twelve months.

The demand for natural gas in Spain has closed with an estimated 14% increase in 2019 compared to last year, reaching 398 TWh, the highest figure since 2010, according to data provided by Spanish LNG terminal operator Enagas. 

On 9 December the classification society Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore officially announced its join in the "Coalition for Maritime Environmental and Energy Transition" as a founding partner. The singing ceremony was held during the leading annual gathering for the French maritime community, known as Assises de l’Economie de la Mer.

The French President Emmanuel Macron should initiate an international coalition for the energy transition of the transportation sector whose priority will be to develop a more competitive and less carbon-intensive energy source, said Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM.

As part of its commitment to energy transition, the Port of Antwerp inaugurated the first solar concentrator farm in the European process industry. This energy technology generates eco-friendly heat from concentrated sunlight that can be used by industrial companies.

Findings of a study performed by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Stedin and TenneT into the consequences of the energy transition for the power grid in Rotterdam’s port area, estimate that there will be a substantial increase by a factor of two and possibly even four, in the demand for green and other electric power over the next few decades on the part of Rotterdam’s industrial sector.

By mid-century, the energy mix will be split almost equally between fossil and non-fossil sources, with oil declining steeply after 2030, but gas continuing to grow before leveling off at 29% of the energy mix by 2050, says DNV GL in its latest Energy Transition Outlook.
