SKF issued a release, noting the importance of choosing the right oil in seal lubrication procedures, in order to ensure they last in the extremely demanding conditions they are exposed to. In this context and, as the range of marine lubricants on the market is surprisingly diverse, SKF provides information on how oil must be subjected to testing.

Gas natural Fenosa and Baleària officially launched Spain’s first natural gas engine for passenger boats, in the Port of Barcelona. Both companies have fostered the development and installation of the auxiliary engine and a 30 m3 tank of LNG on the ferry Abel Matutes, which consumes natural gas in its manoeuvres and for its electricity production while it is docked, instead of its usual fuel.

Bluewhale 1, the most advanced ultra-deep-water semisubmersible drilling rig, built by Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Limted, was named and delivered in Yantai in February. Compared with traditional drilling rig, it increases efficiency by 30% and saves 10% fuel energy consumption as well.

Corvus Energy announced that it has been selected as the supplier of lithium ion based energy storage systems for two new polar expedition cruise vessels being built for a European expedition cruise operator. Corvus will supply its Orca Energy ESS to provide supplemental energy to the vessels in order to improve performance and reduce operating costs and emissions.

Naval architect and engineering company Foreship has appointed Jan-Erik Räsänen as the new Head of New Technology, who believes that, until the end of the year, one of the main cruise ship players will make a commitment to battery power. Foreship’s goal is to consider the complete picture and design the best-performing ship.

IMO continues to work on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, this time with a train-the-trainer course on energy-efficient ship operation, realized in Mumbai, on 28 February – 3 March, under GloMEEP project. The course trained maritime officials to the complex technical and regulatory aspects designed to make shipping greener.

The Maritime Union of Australia signed new work arrangements with Japanese energy INPEX on the Ichthys LNG project, which aims at enhancing the skills of Australian maritime workers in the offshore oil and gas sector. Project is expected to produce 8.9 million tonnes of LNG and 1.6 million tonnes of LPG each year, along with more than 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak.

Dr. Edmund Hughes, Head of Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency, Marine Environment Division of International Maritime Organization (IMO), talks about IMO’s efforts to combat GHG emissions from shipping, highlighting that industry needs to continue to support the Organization in formulating global regulations towards a more sustainable future.

Under its GloMEEP project, IMO continues to promote energy-efficient ship operations, this time in Philippines. A workshop taking place in Manila on 23-24 February is equipping 30 maritime educators from across the country with the knowledge to introduce the topic of ship energy-efficiency into their teaching curriculums.
