New fuels, energy efficiency to be key in meeting IMO GHG goals

As part of its Energy Transition Outlook 2019, DNV GL provided an independent outlook on the maritime energy future examining how the energy transition will affect the industry. The report forecasts that new fuels, alongside energy efficiency, will play a key role on meeting the IMO greenhouse gas ambitions.

University of Aberdeen to create Centre for Energy Transition

The University of Aberdeen announced its ambition to create a new Centre for Energy Transition. The Centre will align research and education programmes with the opportunities presented by the net zero agenda. The Centre will provide a focus for all areas of energy-related research, with an emphasis on supporting industry in the transition to clean energy and renewables.

Next-gen energy-saving bulker delivered

Japan Marine United informed that it delivered the next-generation energy-saving bulk carrier, Emperor Pampero, on August 29, built at the Tsu Works. The ship is equipped with a scrubber. It also features an optimal hull form, in order to achieve low resistance and high efficiency, while also significantly improving fuel efficiency. The latter will be done through the use of energy saving devices. 

Port of Southampton welcomes more ‘green’ ships

The new high efficiency RoRo vessel from Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s HERO class, has made its maiden call at the Port of Southampton. The HERO class (High Efficiency RoRo) has two new-build ships in its fleet and the latest, MV Traviata, has called at the Port of Southampton for the first time.

Two new green cruise ships to operate in Norway from 2021

Turkey-based Tersan Shipyard is building two new LNG-fueled cruise vessels for Norwegian shipowner Havila Kystruten, expected to operate the historic coastal voyage between Bergen and Kirkenes, along the western coastline of Norway, stopping at 34 ports along the route.

NYK to construct energy-saving bulk carrier

NYK informed that it has concluded a contract with Japan Marine United Corporation to construct a next-generation energy-saving bulk carrier. After delivery in 2021, the ship is planned to transport raw materials for JFE Steel Corporation under a long-term charter contract between NYK and JFE Steel.

IEA presents global commission for advancing energy efficiency

The International Energy Agency has created an independent high-level global commission to examine how progress on energy efficiency can be quickly accelerated through new and stronger policy action. IEA calculates that with the right policies, the global economy could double in size by 2040 while still maintaining broadly the same level of energy use as today.

IMO extends GIA initiative on low carbon shipping

The Global Industry Alliance (GIA) -a key IMO initiative supporting ship decarbonization- is set to be extended to 2023, in line with the timeframe of IMO’s Initial GHG Strategy. The extension follows two years of good progress by the initiative, whose 6th Task Force meeting took place in Gothenberg, Sweden, on 25 June.

New RoRo with enhanced energy efficiency launched

The new RoRo MV Traviata set new benchmark in energy efficiency. The ship is the second of a series of Post-Panamax HERO vessels, and has joined Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s ocean fleet. This is an energy-efficient RoRo vessel. MV Traviata has a capacity equal to 8,000 cars and electrically hoistable deck panels
