Miami Terminal goes full-electric

Kalmar has agreed to supply six of its ‘Zero Emission’ rubber-tyred gantry (RTGs) cranes to the South Florida Container Terminal in Miami. This will make South Florida the first terminal in the US to have 100% zero emission RTGs, as these will be the first ones to be installed by any Miami terminal. The RTGs are scheduled to be delivered in early 2020 and are part of a project focused on redeveloping the South Florida Container Terminal.

China MSA: Regulation on data collection for energy consumption of vessels

UK P&I Club advises members that a new regulation on data collection for energy consumption of vessels has been enacted by the Chinese Maritime Safety Administration, which was put forward on January 1, 2019. According to the new regulation, applicable vessels calling at Chinese ports are to submit to the MSA the ‘Data Report Format for Energy Consumption of Ships’, and providing information on the last voyage, prior to their departure from the port.

World’s first LNG-powered high-speed catamaran under construction in Spain

Spanish ferry operator Baleària announced construction of the world’s first fast passenger and cargo ferry powered by dual-LNG engines, being built in the Armon de Gijón shipyard. With a length of 125 meters and a beam of 28 meters, the new catamaran will have capacity for 1,200 passengers and 500 cars, which also makes it ‘the longest and highest-capacity fast ferry catamaran’.

MEPC 73 upholds EEDI targets for Ro-Ro vessels

MEPC 73 tightened EEDI requirements for certain ship types, but confirmed that ferries would be among the categories where it is appropriate to retain the original timeline and reduction rates. These had been set in three phases, requiring improvements of 10% by 2015, 20% by 2020 and 30% by 2025.
