New RoRo with enhanced energy efficiency launched

The new RoRo MV Traviata set new benchmark in energy efficiency. The ship is the second of a series of Post-Panamax HERO vessels, and has joined Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s ocean fleet. This is an energy-efficient RoRo vessel. MV Traviata has a capacity equal to 8,000 cars and electrically hoistable deck panels

US’s first zero-emission, electric ferry starts operations

Alabama’s Gee’s Bend Ferry has started operations once again, as it has now been converted from diesel propulsion to the first zero-emission, electric-powered passenger/car ferry in the US. The 15-vehicle and 132-passenger ferry operates on the Alabama River between Camden and Boykin, Alabama.

First all-electric ships built in the US to launch in 2019

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that the Maid of the Mist, which has been navigating the waters of the Lower Niagara River, is preparing to launch the first two new all-electric, zero-emission passenger vessels constructed in the US. The vessels will be launched later this year. The new vessels will be placed into service in mid-September.

Swedish shipping industry to go carbon-neutral by 2045

The Swedish shipping sector is planning to end the use of fossil fuels in the country by 2045, meeting national climate goals. Specifically, the Swedish Shipowners’ Association is creating plan to achieve zero GHG emissions, along with Fossil-free Sweden, a government initiative. Rikard Engström and Svante Axelsson, the heads of the two organisations, said that shipping can become more efficient and switch to biofuels or electricity.

New electric ferry to start operation at Gothenburg

A Volvo Penta powered electric ferry service is being introduced into Gothenburg’s ElectriCity transport ecosystem.The new electric-powered ferry will link both sides of the Göta River. Volvo Penta will be the first fully-electric ferry in the city able to complete longer, multi-stop routes along the river, and incorporate quick charging capabilities.
