The 80th session of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) took place from 3-7 July 2023, where emission monitoring and reduction measures such as DCS and CII were discussed.  

Liberia Maritime Authority has issued an advisory to provide guidance on the interim compliance with MARPOL Annex VI EEXI requirements.

According to DNV, verification of a ship’s attained Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) takes place at the first annual, intermediate or renewal survey, which is on or after 1 January 2023. However, some shipowners face challenges to install the required equipment on board within the required deadlines.

During the 2023 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, Mrs. Maria Tsompanoglou, Energy Performance Manager, Pantheon Tankers Management Ltd, presented an overview of the impact of specific energy-saving technologies on the EEXI & CII for large tankers and bulk carriers. The presentation focused on the most widely known energy-saving technologies that are already widespread in the market and have proven their effectiveness: pre-swirl stators, PBCFs and low-friction coatings.

ClassNK has released "Guidelines for Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems for Ships (Edition 2.0)", which specify requirements for ensuring the safety of ships equipped with wind-assisted propulsion systems based on the latest insights obtained from the involvement in actual installation projects. 

Ocean Network Express (ONE) decided to install two containerized wind assist units on one of their operated container feeder ships before the end of 2023.

Matson Navigation Company has confirmed that it will convert the main engine aboard its container ship, ‘Kaimana Hila’, from an MAN B&W S90ME-C10.5 unit to a dual-fuel ME-GI unit capable of running on LNG.

DNV has released a technical update on the use of biofuels or biofuel blends to clarify the regulatory status and other considerations on the usage of such fuels. Seeing that biofuels are one of many ways to comply with the IMO’s strategy on the reduction of Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) emissions from ships, DNV provides a summary of regulatory issues, safety and operational aspects.

2023 is going to be a year of focus on the environment. Following COP27, the message is clear; we need to act now against the climate change and for the maritime industry, IMO has already paved the way with the enforcement of strict environmental rules; nonetheless, maritime safety will always be a key concern for the industry. 

During 2022, shipping industry joined forces and launched several initiatives to support its Environmental, Social and Governance topics. As the industry is heading towards a more sustainable future, the challenges are many. Improving its image remains a top priority and ESG showcase the positive strides that shipping is making.
