Philly Shipyard, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Philly Shipyard ASA, announced that it has entered into a Letter of Intent with a blue chip US shipping operating company for the construction and sale of up to four new, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly containerships, with planned deliveries in 2020 and 2021.

MOL announced that three of its 50,000 DWT methanol carriers received prize rewarding the most technologically advanced ships. The vessels are the world’s first methanol carriers with main engines that use methanol as fuel.

Japanese K Line announced that its “DRIVE GREEN HIGHWAY,” a 7,500RT large-scale car carrier won the award of “Ship of the Year 2016” by the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, on July 7. The ship is equipped with technologies that contribute to reduction of air pollutant emissions.

ESL Shipping announced that it christened its new eco-friendly dry cargo vessel, at the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China, on June 28. The ship was christened Viikki in honor of the shipping company’s tradition to name its ships for places in Helsinki.

Wärtsilä said it has been selected to provide its main engine, the propulsion machinery, and the auxiliary engines for a new state-of-the-art pelagic trawler under construction at a Norwegian shipyard. The vessel has been ordered by Research Fishing Co based in Lerwick, Shetland Islands.

On June 7, General Dynamics NASSCO delivered the final ECO Class tanker "Palmetto State" to American Petroleum Tankers, as part of an eight-tanker program deal. The vessels are the most environmentally friendly tankers to enter the Jones Act trade, offering 33 percent increased fuel efficiency and a corresponding reduction in ship emissions.

On the occasion of the World Ocean Day, on June 8th, the Global Ghost Gear Initiative issued the second part of its study, entitled "Best Practices Framework for the Management of Fishing Gear", providing practical guidance to decrease the abundance and effects of ghost gear within the shipping industry.

At the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo, partners of the “Green Corridor” joint industry project (JIP) presented their plan for developing a LNG-fuelled Newcastlemax design bulker operating on the Australia–China iron ore and coal trade route. The vessel is currently in the process of receiving Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV GL.

The 'Future of the Fjords' passenger vessel which is the sister ship to the striking diesel-electric plug-in hybrid Vision of the Fjords that launched last year, is currently under construction at shipbuilder Brødrene Aa. This 42m long carbon fibre vessel will be all electric and completely emission free, its operator Fjords DA said, and it will be completed in April 2018.
