The European Investment Bank and Finnish marine technology company Wärtsilä have signed a EUR 125 million loan agreement, focused on the research and development of more environmentally-friendly and efficient ship engines and power plants.

Finnish Wärtsilä announced that it is introducing its Voyage Emissions Reduction system as a means for increasing oil tanker revenues, while also aiding the environment through reduced emissions. The system aims to solve  the problem of volatile organic compound emissions from tankers during laden voyages.

Maritime group, CMB, officially presented the Hydroville, the world’s first accredited passenger vessel powered by hydrogen in a diesel engine. The catamaran is the first pilot project to test hydrogen technology for applications in large seafaring ships.

Teekay Offshore Partners announced that it has declared options with Samsung Heavy Industries for the construction of two, Suezmax-sized, DP2 shuttle tanker newbuildings for a total fully-built-up cost of approximately $265 million.

GONDAN announced it is building four GRP ecofast ferries with a capacity for 350 passengers for Baleària shipping company. The 28m-long vessels have been designed focusing on eco-efficiency and speed during navigation.

The 20,170 TEU 'MOL TRUTH' is the first container ship of the 20,000 TEU class deployed for trade between Asia and Europe. The Ultra Large Container Ship is eco-friendly, reducing CO2 emissions up to 50% compared to other container ships.
