DNV to conduct risk studies for German LNG bunker station

LNG bunker station at Brunsbüttel, Germany Gasnor and Brunsbüttel Port are planning to build an LNG (liquefied natural gas) bunker station at Brunsbüttel, Germany. DNV has been contracted to conduct the risk studies of the project, which will be the basis for the authorities' approval of the project. With this important step Gasnor and Brunsbüttel Port are leading the way in offering LNG fuel at Brunsbüttel and the Northern German area, at the strategic location of the crossing of the river Elbe and the Kiel-Canal. In the context of generally increasing demands in environmentally friendly shipping, eco-friendly fuel is a key aspect. LNG is an environmentally-friendly energy source for ships, and it has already been in use for quite some years. The planned LNG bunker station will provide a safe, reliable and cost-effective way for fuelling sea vessels and barges with LNG.Gasnor has contracted DNV to conduct the risk studies that will be the basis for the authorities' approval of the project. Important elements in the risk analysis are a safety screening of the site and a safety analysis for the chosen location in terms of quantitative risk analysis, emergency planning and nautical risk analysis. In addition DNV will be supporting ...

Energy Efficiency: What you need to know

MARPOL Annex VI requirements coming into force on 1 January 2013 With the new MARPOL Annex VI requirements coming into force on 1 January 2013, it is imperative that shipowners and operators are up to date on the consequences for their fleet. What is the EEDI? EEDI stands for Energy Efficiency Design Index. It is an index quantifying the amount of carbon dioxide that a ship emits in relation to the goods transported. The actual EEDI of a vessel is called the "attained EEDI" and is calculated based on guidelines published by IMO. The result must be below the limit ("required EEDI") prescribed in MARPOL.For existing vessels, the EEDI is in most cases irrelevantA. For new shipsB, a technical file must be created showing the attained EEDI and its calculation process. The EEDI and the technical file will be subject to verification by the flag administration. Note that the EEDI and technical file are not required for all ship typesC.What is an IEEC? IEEC stands for International Energy Efficiency Certificate. It is a newly introduced certificate that is mandatory for all vessels of 400 gross tonnage and above. Contrary to most statutory certificates, the IEEC is not connected to a survey ...

DNV increases its Arctic focus and acquires oil spill preparedness company NPS

Planning and training for oil-spill preparedness The Arctic has large oil and gas resources and operations in this sensitive and harsh area will require efficient oil-spill preparedness solutions. "The acquisition of Norwegian Petro Services (NPS) in Norway and its recognised expertise will play an important role in our activities in this field," says Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, DNV's COO of the Norway, Russia and Finland division.Oil and gas operations in the northern areas introduce several new risk elements; the distances are greater, the climate is cold, it is dark for a lot of the year and there may be no infrastructure. It is important that the safety level here is at least as good as in the conventional areas. Therefore, the Arctic conditions will require improved technology and new knowledge to reduce the likelihood of an accidental oil spill. In addition, efficient oil-spill preparedness solutions that reduce the consequences of a potential accident must also be put in place."Both the industry and society focus heavily on reducing the environmental effects of operations in Arctic areas such as the Barents Sea. DNV wants to contribute to this, and the acquisition of NPS is an important strategic move in that sense. We are now ...

Singapore Joint Industry Project on future LNG Bunkering

Joint Industry Project (JIP) in co-operation with DNV for LNG Bunkering in Singapore The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), has established a Joint Industry Project (JIP) to investigate the operational feasibility of LNG bunkering in Singapore in collaboration with Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Clean Technology Centre and 21 industry partners. The JIP, co-funded through MPA's MINT fund, kicked off in January 2012 with the aim to provide recommendations to the Singapore government authorities on enabling LNG bunkering in Singapore, ensuring operational safety, alignment with industry expectations and best practice, and compliance with relevant international rules, regulations and standards. The shipping industry is looking to LNG as a cleaner marine fuel to meet the international regulations as LNG has much lower emissions compared to the conventional marine diesel oil. Emissions from ships have come into the "environmental spotlight" and the industry is subject to progressively more stringent legislation, including global cap or fuel sulphur content, potential CO2 emission taxation, NOx emission controls and forthcoming regulations on Particulate Matters' emission etc.LNG fuelled propulsion has been demonstrated to meet the strictest environmental regulations and to be technically feasible. At present, there are 25 LNG fuelled ships all of which are operating in the ...
