Associated British Ports (ABP) is the latest business to join Maritime UK's "Diversity in Maritime Charter program", in an effort to attract a more diverse workforce. To remind, the initiative creates a framework to challenge companies to make progress on gender diversity.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) reported that despite the COVID-19 impact on the shipping industry, they saw an increase on the female cadets that signed up for the BMA's programme.

Change does not happen over night, and hopefully, the global community is already on a journey for a more diverse and equal industry. All in all, the practices and cultures we build now will be critical to the sustainability of our industry as we move forward, Mrs Matthews notes.

Petra Sviberg, a seafarer on Viking Line's ferry Viking Cinderella, focuses on the role women have in the shipping industry, highlighting that women have still a stereotypical image and presenting the Swedish #metoo movement in Sweden called Vågrätt.

The Royal Canadian Navy inroduced its new initiative, supporting diversity of genders, by adopting gender-neutral ranks.

Global maritime charity Sailors’ Society appointed Sara Baade as its new Chief Executive Officer, starting in September 2020, and welcomed Revd Hasna Khatun as port chaplain to its Southampton team, boosting women presence within the maritime sector.
