On the sidelines of EUROPORT, we were pleased to host an interview with Dr-Ing Orestis Schinas Professor of Shipping and Ship Finance, Head of Department of Maritime and Logistics of Hamburg School of Business Administration (HSBA) which was the winner for a 2019 CAREER4SEA- EUROPORT award alongside a number of other distinguished nominees.
During the SAFETY4SEA Hamburg Forum, Chronis Kapalidis, Cyber Expert, HudsonAnalytix, referred to myths behind cyber security. He stressed that the narrative about cybersecurity, when talking to industry stakeholders should focus on cyber risk and cyber resilience instead of cybersecurity.
During the SAFETY4SEA Hamburg Forum, Mathias Karlsson, Researcher, RISE Viktoria, talked about Port Collaborative Decision Making and how digitalization can improve operations at ports. PortCDM aims to improve efficiency and effectiveness of activities in any port by providing a framework for data sharing and enhanced collaboration, thus making their operations more efficient.
During the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Athens Forum, Mr. Stavros Meidanis, DPA/CSO, S&Q Manager, Capital Ship Management Corp shared his views on how shipping will look like in 2030 even 2050, focusing on implications for ship managers in the future.
In our special column this time, we are pleased to host an interview with Dana Jongens, Business Development Manager Maritime at Inmarsat, who says that although shipping is not the most progressive sector, there’s still room for improvement. Ms Jongens shares hes inspiration to change the industry’s reputation and make it more appealing.
Andreas Chrysostomou, CEO, Marine Fields explains how shipping may effectively use data, which is rightly characterized as the ‘Gold of the digital age’ and refers to his company data sharing platform, Perseus, that aims to enhance the predictability of port call operations. Concluding, Mr. Chrysostomou calls industry to follow the evolution timely, stressing that we are to witness more digital developments in future and that there is need to build a ‘shipping digital culture’ to embrace transparency, collaboration and efficiency.
Adm. (USCG Ret) Thad William Allen notes that we are living in a digital age and therefore industry needs to tackle with new and emerging issues. Earlier this year leaders from the Hellenic and American shipping communities came together in Athens to discuss current issues and exchange views to promote safer, smarter, greener, optimized, innovative, and sustainable shipping.
During the 2019 Hellenic American Maritime Forum, Mr. Chronis Kapalidis, Cyber Expert, HudsonAnalytix, talked about the possible cyber security challenges that shipping is facing. He explained that effectiveness, trustworthiness and safety and security can improve a company’s cyber security.
While the voting procedure for the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Awards is open, Manit Chander, CEO, HiLo Maritime Risk Management, talks about HiLo data platform – which has been shortlisted for an Initiative Award- and informs about the new add-on that will broaden its knowledge-sharing functionality. Based on HiLo’s success, Mr Chander highlights that sharing data for improving safety does not harm business, it can only help to save ships and lives.
