DFDS response on the EU Sulphur Directive

On January 1, 2015 the EU Sulphur Directice 2012/33/EU will bring about a major reduction in sulphur dioxide emission from ships and that will heavenly impact shipping in northern Europe. The Directive will require ships sailing in the English Channel, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to use bunker oil with a maximum 0,1% sulphur or apply alternative methods in order to achieve the same effect.  The new rules will come into effect in 2015 and there will be no exemptions. There are basically three ways to comply with the new legislation: Switch to the MGO fuel Change to LNG Invest in scrubbers that remove sulphur from the exhaust gases from ships.  All three options will lead to significant cost increases for shipping companies. Legislation for their use is stull not fully in place and there is a significant lead time for such major conversions to existing vessels. DFDS has been testing the world's first large scrubber on freight ship FICARIA SEAWAYS since 2009 and the results are promising as the technology achieved promising results and often better than when using MGO. DFDS is now investing up to EUR 100 million to retrofit a number of vessels with scrubbers. By ...

DFDS helps develop effective hull cleaning

CROWN SEAWAYS has recently made her hull available for testing a new type of vehicle - an unusual looking machine, that can ensure optimum cleaning of a ships hull, without damaging the bottom paint and most importantly not requiring a period in dry dock. The machine has been developed by Kapacitet A/S  and it is able to clean the entire hull below the water line when the ship is in port.  Hull cleaning and fuel reduction A major cost of operating a ship is the cost of fuel and a reduction in fuel consumption will therefore help reduce our operating costs. Since a large percentage of a ship’s propulsive energy is required to overcome friction, keeping the hull’ surface smooth is important. A smooth hull will improve the speed of a ship and increase the distance covered, compared to a hull that has not been cleaned, where algae can easily cause increased fiction. So regular cleaning of a ship’s hull is important. Source & Image Credit: DFDS Connects   In the outbreak, I was forthright with you propecia before and after has changed my existence. Retrofitting a scrubber, a shipowner’ s experience

DFDS operates one of Europe's largest integrated shipping and logistics networks, offering comprehensive supply chain and shipping solutions to customers. DFDS is in the forefront of scrubber retrofit actually because we have some good background for doing that. We own a number of the ships we operate and therefore, we are able to control the long-term deployment and have knowledge of our activities inside the SECA. We have the money, and don't underestimate this because you'll find it very difficult to find financing for scrubbers, it does not really add to the value of a ship and financial institutions intend to like some kind of collateral, however your ship value will not increase. We also think that the scrubbers are better than MGO for the environment so we have a next top added benefit here. In the past, we installed the first system already back in 2009, we installed three more last year, we've also installed one already this year, we actually have two ships in dry dock right now to be installed with more scrubbers and in total this year we will do seven and will probably do another seven in 2015. We have set aside about 100 million ...
