The DFDS Ro-Ro cargo ship "Finlandia Seaways" suffered a fire in its engine room in April 16 in the English Channel, while heading to Rosyth UK, from Zeebrugge Belgium. One crewmember, who was in the engine room when the fire broke out, was injured and was transported to a hospital in the UK.

Shipping and logistics company DFDS has recorded a record result for 2017. The company reported an operating profit of DKK 2.7 billion, mainly due to the increase in volumes of the company’s ten freight routes across the North Sea. To meet with the increased volume growth that is expected to occur, DFDS ordered four mega ships.

The Danish Port of Esbjerg has acquired a new harbour terminal that has already been put into operation at the East Port. When the terminal is completed in the spring, it will comprise four fully automatic gates and 1,600 m2 of workshops, washing facilities and offices.  

LEGO officially launched a new product inspired by shipping. This is not the first time for the company, as there are already many fascinating LEGO models in the market set with ship theme. 

The first hull cleaning of a cruise vessel has been completed in Copenhagen. The removal of marine fouling from the DFDS Group’s 2,800 DWT ‘Pearl Seaways’, which serves routes between Copenhagen and Oslo, marked the latest in more than 550 hull cleans carried out by the pioneering remotely operated vehicle worldwide.

Denmark-based DFDS announced that it has appointed Verifavia-Shipping, earlier this month, for the first step of the verification process of its MRV plan, under the EU MRV Regulation. The "Ark Germania" was the first DFDS ship to have its monitoring plan approved, last week.

DFDS has ordered two more large freight ships which are to be built at the Jinling shipyard in China by naval architects Knud E. Hansen. In total, DFDS has ordered four large ro-ro ships to service freight customers across the North Sea from 2019 and 2020. The ships are the first DFDS-owned vessels built according to the new IMO environmental standards.

ABB will equip two DFDS vessels with shaft generators that will raise their energy efficiency, in order to meet the latest environmental regulations. Two shaft generators will be installed in each of the cargo Ro-Ro ships, allowing the main engines to operate at a wider speed range.

Poul Woodall shares DFDS views on the challenges ahead now that IMO has decided that the 0.5% Global Sulphur Cap will be effective in three years. Among the important issues for consideration will be the quantity, quality and cost of existing fuels in 2020, the logistics, the scrubber uptake and the refinery dilemma.

DFDS signed an agreement Port of Ghent, aiming to increase the number of ro/ro freight sailings between Ghent and Gothenburg. During the summer of 2017, the Ark Germania will be added as a fourth ship to the route, which will increase the number of weekly departures from six to eight.
