DNV GL announced that Samsung Heavy Industries INTELLIMAN Ship software is compliant with the EU-MRV and IMO-DCS regulations. The INTELLIMAN Ship is a smart ship solution, aiming to facilitate data management from fleet operation to life-cycle service. DNV GL confirmed that the software can be used as a recording and reporting tool.

Inmarsat has collaborated with the start-up programmes, Rainmaking Trade and Transport Impact and Bluetech Accelerator, to support news businesses focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data innovation in the maritime, ports and logistics supply chain.

Bunkering is considered as one of the most challenging operations and procedures on board because it requires a great level of effort, time and response in order to be conducted safely. Bunkering is also involved in the new IMO requirement toward the reduction of Green House Gases - and especially CO2 – from ship emissions, the so called IMO Data Collection System.

As of 1st January 2019, amendments to the bunker delivery note have entered into force, relating to the supply of marine fuel oil to ships, which have fitted alternative mechanisms to comply with the IMO's 2020 sulphur cap. Other amendments that entered into force this year include the IMSBC Code 2017 amendment and the amendments to designate North Sea and Baltic Sea as ECAs.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands issued guidance for compliance with both the global IMO data collection system for fuel oil consumption of ships and the EU system for Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV). The document underlines that these two data collection schemes are not harmonized.

Inmarsat revealed Fleet Data, an IoT service, which will enable ship owners and managers to access and analyse real-time onboard. Fleet Data will record data from the onboard Voyage Data Recorder, and other vessel sensors, process that data, and upload it to a central database, which incorporates a dashboard and Application Process Interface.

The South Korean shipbuilder selected Amazon Web Services, an Amazon.com company, as its preferred cloud provider to support its digital transformation. The company's smart shipping systems leverage a wide variety of services to create integrated systems for all vessel-related data collected from land to sea. 

The remote location of polar oceans, their vastness and dangerous environment raise significant challenges when gathering data and conducting science. However, advances in technology are providing new opportunities for data collection that go beyond what was possible even 20 years ago.

ICS launched a new report setting out its firm opposition to the concept of mandatory operational efficiency indexing of individual ships as a possible candidate measure for CO2 reduction, because of 'the potential inaccuracies of such a metric and the significant danger of market distortion'.

In 2019 the new mandatory requirements on Electronic Data Interchange will  require public authorities to set up systems for the electronic exchange of information to assist ship clearance processes. BIMCO will attend the 42nd session of the IMO’s Committee on Facilitation Committee from 5 to 8 June 2018, urging IMO to harmonise digital data reporting.
