As modern marine vessels and offshore units are equipped with various functionalities for structural and machinery health monitoring, efficiency monitoring, and operational performance management and optimization, the collection of data is carried out through sensors and onboard instrumentation in order to analyze data and provide health and condition awareness, operational and crew assistance, and operational optimization. ABS issued an Advisory paper on data quality for marine and offshore applications.

The ambassadors of EU member states agreed on their position on a proposal which updates existing EU rules on shipping emissions monitoring, and partially aligns them with the global data collection system for ship fuel oil consumption of the IMO.

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K LINE), Mitsui O.S.K Lines, Ltd. (MOL), and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have started sharing of operational data acquired from the monitoring system installed in their container ships with their charter, Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. (ONE), through the IoS-Open Platform (IoS-OP) promoted by Ship Data Center Ltd. (ShipDC).

The second meeting of the pilot project aiming to encourage interoperability between industry and competent authorities in the European Maritime Single Window environment under the CISE process took place on 25 September. The pilot project will identify and test technical solutions to facilitate reporting for the benefit of ships and the MRS/VTS centres.

Traxens informed about the development of the first standards for smart container data exchange, that were published by the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT). Business Requirements Specifications (BRS) aims to deliver internationally standardized messaging, in order to enable the use of smart container data.  

BHP’s Maritime and Supply Chain Excellence team and Klaveness Digital informed that they are cooperating in order to drive the development of new shipping and logistics platforms. These aim to improve the way the industry works together and shares scheduling and vessel information.

Andreas Chrysostomou, CEO, Marine Fields explains how shipping may effectively use data, which is rightly characterized as the ‘Gold of the digital age’ and refers to his company data sharing platform, Perseus, that aims to enhance the predictability of port call operations. Concluding, Mr. Chrysostomou calls industry to follow the evolution timely, stressing that we are to witness more digital developments in future and that there is need to build a ‘shipping digital culture’ to embrace transparency, collaboration and efficiency.

Rivertrace announced that it has created a new, web-based software system for the automatic collation of MARPOL oily water discharge data. The  software system interprets, and records oily water discharge data received from Rivertrace’s Oil Record Book Bilge Overboard Security System monitoring equipment.

India claims that it has become the first country in the world to issue Biometric Seafarer Identity Document (BSID), capturing the facial bio-metric data of seafarers. Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, MoS (I/C) Shipping and Chemical & Fertilizers, initiated the project in New Delhi, on August 28. He also handed over the new BSID cards to five Indian seafarers.

The Korean register launched a greenhouse gas online data management system called 'KR GEARs' (GHG Emission Authentic Reporting System) to assist shipowners be in compliance with the GHG regulations imposed in the shipping industry.
