As the Club informed, key targets relate to shipment, handling and carriage of dangerous goods. 2019 has seen a significant increase in incidents regarding shipment of dangerous goods, including a number of high-profile ship fires.

ABS, CINS to develop best practices for carriage of dangerous goods

ABS is cooperating with CINS members over the past six months to develop best stowage strategy guidelines. After a three-month trial, the best practice guidelines will be published. The collaboration gathers key industry stakeholders to examine the challenges and risks container ship owners and operators face when stowing dangerous goods.

How to secure cargo for roll trailers

West of England Club highlights the importance of safely securing cargo, in order to avoid any incidents. The Club continues to receive claims in respect of cargo shifting due to inadequate securing where roll trailers have been used. This can either be inadequate securing of the load to the trailer or inadequate securing of the trailer to the vessel, or a combination of both.

INTERCARGO: Ammonium Nitrate should not be treated as group C

Following  the investigation report of the 2012 built supramax bulk carrier M/V CHESHIRE which was issued by the  Isle of Man Ship Registry, INTERCARGO urges IMO to reconsider how Ammonium Nitrate Based Fertilizer should be designated in the IMSBC Code. Currently, the Ammonium Nitrate Based Fertilizer is listed as a group C cargo, however, the accident showed that this cargo, or at least some of the ammonium nitrate based fertilizers shipped as this cargo, should treated  differently under the IMSBC Code.

Better booking procedures will cut misdeclared box risk

Dangerous cargo hidden in just one container can destroy a whole ship if it burns or explodes at sea. Yves Vandenborn, loss prevention director of The Standard Club, says a more rigorous approach to container booking is needed if shipowners are to protect their ships, crews and reputations from the real risk of misdeclared box cargoes.

Regulatory update: Container ships safety

With the growing size of container vessels, misdeclaration of cargo together with insufficient firefighting capabilities are currently two of the main challenges related to container ship safety.
