The IVR Association issued an informing paper explaining the hidden risks of biological corrosion and providing additional information on how to avoid bacteria that damage ship bilges; The technical leaflet "Biological Corrosion" is focusing on a number of cases where the issue of leaking engine rooms seems to be more and more common these days. 

Following the two months of environmental disaster in Brazil after an oil spill, investigators suggested that a greek-flagged tanker, carrying Venezuelan oil, is the main suspect of this polluting situation. Yet, the Greek Company, Delta Tankers Ltd. denies all accusations supporting that their vessel reached its destination without any problem. 

A Carnival Cruise Line vessel was damaged on September 20 while travelling through the Panama Canal. The owner company stated that Carnival Fantasy, which was built in 1990, came in contact with one of the locks while the water levels were being lowered. It was also announced that no one was injured during the incident.

The US NTSB issued an investigation report on the contact of the towing vessel 'Steve Richoux' with a pier on the Mississippi River, caused by a steering system failure. There were no pollution or injuries, but estimated property damage exceeded $3 million.

Two unmanned barges broke loose Wednesday night from their mooring site in the Port of Muskogee, staying adrift for several hours on the swollen Arkansas River, Oklahoma, before they crashed into a dam, Thursday. The barges were carrying about 3,800 pounds of phosphate fertilizer between them.

The Swedish Club highlights how to avoid wet damaged cargo. It says that heavy weather in combination with leaking hatch covers is the most common cause of wet damage on cargo. However, the main concern is the incorrectly applied and poorly maintained cargo hatch covers and sealing systems.

2019 is considered a busy year for the shipping industry and the IMO, especially with the upcoming SOLAS amendments. In fact, special consideration should be given to amendments to SOLAS Chapter II-1 on damage stability, which came into force in 2009. Amendments to SOLAS Chapter II-1 aim to harmonise cargo ship and passenger ship damage stability, as they made probabilistic damage stability the main method for calculating damage stability.
