IEA launched its World Energy Outlook 2019, exploring a number of today's issues that challenge the industry, as the dissonance amongst well-supplied oil markets and developing geopolitical tensions, the gap between the rapidly-increasing GHG emissions and the lack of stated policies to deal with those emissions, and the promise of "energy for all", in comparison to the lack of electricity access for 850 million people in the globe.

The inaugural SAFETY4SEA Manila Forum was successfully concluded on Tuesday 12th of November 2019 at New World Manila Bay Hotel, Philippines, attracting 350 delegates from 120 organizations. Discussions varied among key challenges affecting the industry, with a special focus on the hot issue of attracting new generations and diversified talents in the maritime industry which is struggling to cope with the reforms brought by accelerating technology and remain productive and efficient.

The UK-based marine services provider James Fisher and Sons (JFS) announced that they were victims of a cyber attack, as their computer systems suffered an unauthorized intrusion. The company as a precaution took all affected systems offline, to understand in what extend they had been affected and acknowledge the severity of the attack.

BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) have published a new cyber security guidebook as a guide for the master and officers on board ships and thereby help them prepare for a potential cyber incident. The "Cyber Security Workbook for On Board Ship Use" report highlights that amid the fast digitalization development, and the industry's heavy reliance on technology.

A new research facility aiming to address the key cyber security challenges facing the shipping industry is being established at the University of Plymouth. The £3million Cyber-SHIP Lab, supported by funding from Research England, part of UK Research and Innovation, and industry, will gather connected maritime systems currently found on an actual ship’s bridge.

During the SAFETY4SEA Hamburg Forum, Chronis Kapalidis, Cyber Expert, HudsonAnalytix, referred to myths behind cyber security. He stressed that the narrative about cybersecurity, when talking to industry stakeholders should focus on cyber risk and cyber resilience instead of cybersecurity.
