Climate initiatives such as the World Ports Climate Action Program took centre stage at the first day of the GreenPort Congress being held in Valencia, Spain, on 16 October. Meanwhile, the event touched upon how the industry needs to balance a mix of priorities and investments to meet the 2020 sulphur cap.
Port of Bergen will build Europe’s largest onshore power supply in Norway’s largest cruise port. The aim is for the facility to be ready at the beginning of the cruise season in 2020. The shore power facility will be able to supply three cruise vessels with power simultaneously.
The Hanseatic and University City of Rostock, AIDA Cruises and Rostock Port signed a letter of intent to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable cruise shipping on the Rostock. The agreement includes the construction of a shore power plant in Rostock-Warnemünde by 2020.
The Port of San Diego was awarded a Green Fleet Leadership Award, for its dedication to exploring options for alternative fuels and reducing petroleum use and emissions in the San Diego region. The Port was placed in the Green Fleet Ally category.
The Port of Newcastle has already accepted investments for the new cruise terminal and non-coal freight facilities. This is important, but a further development of the port is necessary for it to keep up with Hunter and NSW economy.
A dead whale was found stuck on the submerged bulbous bow of the 290-meters long “Grand Princess” cruise ship, when she reached Ketchikan port, Alaska. The incident is currently investigated by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Peace Boat has signed a letter of intent with the Finnish shipbuilding company Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Inc., in order to construct the Ecoship, the world’s greenest cruise ship. The agreement was announced during Nor-Shipping Conference, on May 30th.
Carnival Corporation released artist renderings of its second cruise terminal at the Port of Barcelona, which will be Europe’s newest passenger cruise terminal when it opens, in 2018. The terminal is designed to accommodate the company’s “next-generation” green cruise ships, that will be fully operated by LNG, the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel.
A Bahamian-flagged cruise ship ran aground at Raja Ampat reef, the most popular dive site in Indonesia, causing more than 135,00-square-miles damage earlier this month.
Cruise Baltic announced that its destination partner, Port of Aalborg, has a large investment on its way, which will be to the benefit of both the environment and the cruise lines. According to it, cruise vessels, when calling at the Port of Aalborg, can discharge black and grey water in an environmentally-friendly manner.
