US Senator Deb Fischer introduced legislation to amend the Death on the High Seas Act (DOHSA) to provide a basis for compensation for the pain, suffering and other emotional losses suffered by the surviving family members killed at sea.
A proposal to hit cruise lines with a new tax will add an unfair burden to the industry and drive up costs for both operators and passengers, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia warned. The Association refers to Australia’s Biosecurity Imports Levy, to be implemented by July 2019.
On 1 March, new environmental requirements for emissions and discharges in the world heritage fjords the Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord, Geirangerfjord, Sunnylvsfjord and Tafjord entered into force. In recognition of the critical, ongoing and dependent relationship between eligible assistance dogs and their handlers, Australia has established a process to allow eligible assistance dogs to travel with their handlers on cruise vessels between Australian ports where the vessel is under biosecurity control.
Passenger amenities on cruise ships has far surpassed the original language of the existing regulations. The Marine Safety Center in 2016 developed Plan Review Guideline SOLAS-29 “Overhanging Decks” to assist vessel owners and operators when using or installing awnings and similar coverings on open deck areas.
The US Coast Guard announced the publication of a Final Rule to eliminate outdated regulations that impose not necessary screening requirements on cruise ships and cruise ship terminals, in order to improve cruise ships security.
