The world’s first cruise ship partially powered by batteries will leave northern Norway to start its maiden voyage, according to cruise operator Hurtigruten. The hybrid cruise ship ‘Roald Amundsen’s’ battery pack allows it to operate solely on batteries for about 45 to 60 minutes under ideal conditions.
Hurtigruten, expedition cruise line signed a deal with Norway-based Biokraft to supply climate-neutral liquified biogas (LBG) – and power ships with fuel made from dead fish and other organic waste. The partnership includes near-daily delivery of biogas produced from organic waste to Hurtigruten ships, the first cruise ships in the world to be powered by fossil-free LBG.
Hurtigruten launched silent, electric-powered and emission-free catamarans. The company has collaborated with Norwegian startup Brim Explorer, in order to introduced the battery powered catamarans, which are custom built for Polar water exploration. Starting operations in the spring of 2020, the 24-meter vessel will operate in daily ocean excursions from Longyearbyen on the Arctic island of Svalbard.
In a ceremony at Fincantieri’s shipyard “Arsenale Triestino San Marco”, in Trieste, Italy, Seattle-based Windstar Cruises, initiated construction of the first of three new ships sections, under Windstar’s $250 Million Star Plus Initiative.
German cruise shipbuilder Meyer Werft announced that it has delivered the world’s first LNG-fueled cruise ship to AIDA Cruises. ‘AIDANova’ is the largest cruise ship ever built in Germany, setting new standards in terms of environmental sustainability as the LNG technology is expected to significantly reduce emissions.
Carnival Cruise Line announced that the first steel was cut for the company’s first LNG-fueled ship, as part of the company’s green cruising platform. The vessel will be the largest Carnival cruise ship ever constructed and the first-ever ship operating in North America to use LNG. A steel cutting ceremony was held in Finland on 15 November.
On October 8, AIDA Cruises’ newest ship AIDAnova departed the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The ship will now be transferred on the river Ems to Eemshaven, Netherlands. AIDAnova passed the dock gate in Papenburg, the Friesen-bridge near Weener and then the Jann-Berghaus-bridge in Leer.
Baleària floated out the ship ‘Hypatia de Alejandría’, which will be the first ferry powered by LNG to operate in the Mediterranean. ‘Hypatia de Alejandría’ will be the first of the two ferries that will be operate with LNG. This first ferry is scheduled to start operations in the Balearic Islands in the beginning of 2019.
Carnival Corporation announced that it placed a new order for the German brand AIDA Cruises.The new LNG-powered ship will be built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, and is expected to be delivered in 2023. The ship will have a gross tonnage of more than 180,000 and an estimated 2,700 cabins.
The ship will be delivered in 2020, and will be the largest cruise ship to be built specifically for the British market. It will feature 180,000 gross tons and will be able to welcome approximately 5,200 guests. Both new ships will be registered in the UK. The first of the new ships will begin operations in September.
