Starboard Cruise Services appoints woman CEO

Starboard Cruise Services appointed Lisa Bauer as its President and Chief Executive Officer. Throughout her career, Ms. Bauer has been involved in many charitable causes, while she has served nine years with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. In her new role, Ms. Bauer will oversee all operations for Starboard and sister company Onboard Media.

The Founder of Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson, and Virgin Voyages President and CEO Tom McAlpin announced the appointment of Captain Wendy Williams as Master of Scarlet Lady, the cruise line’s first ship.

Disney Cruise Line announced a new initiative to inspire the next generation of female leaders in the maritime industry by funding scholarships to empower girls and young women to pursue careers in the cruise industry.

In early December, Celebrity Cruises held a naming ceremony for its newest ship ‘Celebrity Edge’. Celebrity Edge is the company’s first new ship in six years and first new ship series in more than a decade. The ship is known for promoting women in multiple roles onboard, as well as for the way the company’s CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, is working to boost women leadership in shipping industry. 

CLIA appoints Kelly Craighead as President and CEO

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced that its Global Executive Committee has appointed Kelly Craighead as President and Chief Executive Officer as from 1 January 2019. Mrs. Craighead will be taking over the role currently held by Cindy D’Aoust, who in July of this year announced her intent to leave her position by year’s end.

UK awards first black female Captain in cruise industry

Under the auspices of the UK Department for Transport and MCA, Captain Belinda Bennett of Windstar Cruises was granted the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service, as ‘the first black female captain in the commercial cruise industry’, for services to the promotion of the maritime sector. Bennett is Windstar’s first female Captain and is first black Captain in the commercial cruise industry.

First female captain named for AIDA fleet

Nicole Langosch has been appointed as captain in the vessel AIDAsol. As a result she became the first woman in the position of captain in the AIDA fleet. Currently, AIDA Cruises employs 14 female nautical officers aboard its fleet.

Celebrity to recruit female bridge officers from Ghana

Celebrity Cruises announced partnership with the Regional Maritime University in Ghana marking the first time in cruise industry history, in order female bridge officers to be openly recruited from a West African country, through a new Celebrity-RMU Cadet Program.
