Royal Caribbean starts building fifth Oasis Class cruise ship

Royal Caribbean announced that it started construction of its fifth Oasis Class cruise ship on April 24 with a steel cutting ceremony. The steel cutting marked the official start of construction, and took place at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The, yet unnamed, Oasis-class ship is planned to be delivered to Royal Caribbean in 2021.

Costa Cruises’ first LNG-fueled vessel floated out

Shipbuilder Meyer Turku informed that Costa Smeralda was floated out with traditional ceremonies at the Meyer Turku shipyard, on March 15. The float-out of Costa Smeralda, an LNG fueled 180 000 GT cruise ship, signals the start of the final stage of construction for the ship. The ceremony marks the outfitting phase in the ship’s construction. The ship will be ready for delivery for Costa Cruises in October 2019.

Shipyard De Hoop published a video depicting the launch of Celebrity Cruises’ new expedition cruise vessel ‘Celebrity Flora’. The ship was launched in Lobith-Tolkamer, the Netherlands and is set to make its first sailing on May 26, 2019. ‘Celebrity Flora’ will go to Rotterdam in a few weeks, in order to undergo the final works, which include the construction on the upper deck.

Carnival launches cruise joint venture in China

The world’s largest cruise company, Carnival Corporation, announced the imminent launch of its cruise joint venture with China’s largest shipbuilder, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), under the name ‘CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Limited’. The new China-based cruise company plans to operate its own fleet to serve Chinese cruise passengers by the end of 2019.

2017 ‘a year of gold’ for global cruise shipbuilding

A new report by ASSONAVE, the association representing the Italian shipbuilding industry, revealed that the cruise sector has had a ‘year of gold’, as 2017 closed with a level of new high orders: 23 ships of over 10,000 CGT compared to 25 in 2016, for a total of 71,200 LB versus 45,162 LB in 2016.
