The "Green North Sea Shipping Corridor" project was officially launched in late November at the Port of Tyne, marking a major step towards cleaner, more sustainable maritime transport.

The Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC) partners have conducted a successful pilot for the bunkering of mass-balanced liquefied bio-methane (LBM) at the Port of Rotterdam (PoR).

A new report by Getting to Zero Coalition and the Global Maritime Forum found that green shipping corridors have rapidly expanded in popularity worldwide, but progress could stall without urgent action from governments to overcome a “feasibility wall.”

The UK Government has announced that the first green shipping routes will be created between the UK and Europe, which will only be accessible to zero emission vessels. 

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the People’s Republic of China’s Shandong Provincial Transport Department signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 9 October to establish the Singapore – Shandong Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC).

In early October, 2024, 15 members of South Korea's National Assembly, led by legislator Dae-rim Moon, introduced the Special Act for Supporting the Establishment of Green Shipping Corridors, marking a significant legislative step as the first of its kind globally.

On October 7th, the Hamburg Declaration will be signed following the green shipping session of the World Ports Conference, a high-level event featuring heads of state, ministers, and CEOs from the maritime and aviation sectors, according to the IAPH

The Port of Long Beach, Shenzhen Port Group, Hutchison Ports YANTIAN, South Coast Air Quality Management District, and the North American Representative Office of Shenzhen have signed a memorandum of cooperation to collaborate on decarbonizing ocean trade and promoting a green maritime economy around the Pacific Rim.

Based on current order books, the potential demand for sustainable variants of methane and methanol for container vessels on the Rotterdam-Singapore route could reach up to 5 million tonnes per year in 2028. However, affordability and availability still needs to be improved to enable the switch to sustainable fuels.

On August 1, 2024, Ulsan Port Authority (UPA) signed a $17.6 million equity investment agreement with Hyundai Oil Terminal Corporation to establish an alternative marine fuel supply chain centered at Ulsan Port.
