During SMM trade fair in Hamburg, DNV and  MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) signed a contract to implement the new DNV Anti-Roll Assist system and ARCS (Anti-Roll for Containerships) class notation in some 100 vessels, which is a ship-specific tool to avoid container losses due to parametric or synchronous rolling.

The International Group is a member of the Maritime Research Institute of the Netherlands (MARIN) Top Tier Project, and has received an annexed roll risk estimator.

The World Shipping Council (WSC) Containers Lost at Sea Report covering 2020-2021 shows that containers lost overboard represent less than one thousandth of 1% (0.001%). However, the past two years have seen a worrying break in the downward trend for losses, with the average number of containers lost at sea per year since the start of the survey increasing by 18% to 1,629.

Eighteen containers were swept overboard from a barge en route from Trang province to Penang island in Malaysia on May 29, with some washing up on a beach in Satun.

Marine insurer Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE (AGCS) issued the Safety & Shipping Review 2022, explaining that large vessels continue to drive ever-higher exposures, with fires, container and carrier losses, hazardous cargo, costlier salvage operations and issues with port of refuge leading to oversized losses and general average becoming more frequent.

DMAIB published its report on Maersk Essen, which on 16 January 2021 lost approximately 250 containers while the ship was en route from Xiamen, China to Los Angeles, USA. The number of lost containers were later adjusted to 750.

A Maersk-chartered ship has lost a number of containers after it encountered poor weather conditions on 21 March while en route to Seattle from Yantian.

AMSA published a recent notice regarding the proper stowage and securing of cargo containers. AMSA aims to remind operators of the importance of stowing and securing cargo containers, and the potential danger to container ships navigating near intense low-pressure systems that occur off the east coast of Australia.

The Panama-registered container ship Marcos V lost the 40-foot containers around the Dutch Wadden islands while en route to Germany in heavy winds, on February 19.

The TopTier project was put in place by industry to find ways to avoid similar incidents in the future, and initial results show that parametric rolling in following seas was especially hazardous.
