Prison for ship surveyor who lied to Coast Guard

21 months in prison A Miami-based ship surveyor was sentenced today for lying to the Coast Guard and for falsely certifying that inspections had been performed on two ships, which were designed to ensure that the ships were seaworthy and did not pose a threat to the crew or the marine environment.Alejandro Gonzalez, 60, of Miami-Dade County, Fla., was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida to 21 months in prison.On May 24, 2012, a federal jury found Gonzalez guilty of lying to a Coast Guard inspector and a federal agent about the drydocking of the M/V Cala Galdana, a 68-meter cargo vessel, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in April 2009 and December 2009.Coast Guard inspectors in San Juan discovered the vessel taking on water in August of 2008 and requested the last drydocking of the vessel. Gonzalez concocted a false story about the vessel being drydocked in Colombia in 2006 when he knew it was not. Coast Guard responds to vessel taking on water, fuel spill

USCG coordilnates efforts to salvage beached Army vessel 'Monterey' Coast Guard personnel are continuing to work with key stakeholders to clean and contain the area around the Army vessel Monterrey, which began taking on water Friday night and remains beached on Puffin Island.After a shoreline assessment by two Marine Safety Detachment Kodiak teams, two areas were identified for cleanup. Absorbent pads will be used to clean as much fuel from these areas as possible.Containment booms established around the Monterrey have reportedly remained effective and absorbent material on the booms is being replaced regularly."We are continuing to work with our federal, state, and local agencies as well as industry representatives to minimize the impact of the fuel spill," said Lt. Matthew Zinn, supervisor of MSD Kodiak. "Everyone involved is committed to returning the water and shoreline in the area to its original, pristine state."Source: USCG News

Safety of Canadians and mariners is the top priority for CCG The Canadian Coast Guard is modernizing twelve Marine Communications and Traffic Services Centres across the country with state-of-the-art technology in order to ensure consistent and uninterrupted communication and traffic services to mariners."The safety of Canadians and mariners is the top priority of the Canadian Coast Guard," said Minister Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. "Improving and integrating communications centres across the country will ensure that important information can be properly broadcast to mariners and emergency calls will be received under all circumstances."Marine Communications and Traffic Services Centres broadcast maritime safety information such as weather and navigational warnings, regulate traffic movement and monitor distress and safety calls. Information is transmitted from a network of 214 radio towers and 24 radar installments across the country. Swedish patrol boats to install IBS

Integrated bridge systems (IBS) for the new class of patrol boats for the Swedish Coast Guard Sperry Marine reports that it is to supply integrated bridge systems (IBS) for the new class of patrol boats being built for the Swedish Coast Guard.The IBS for the patrol boats is based on the company's VisionMaster FT technology, which integrates the vessels' navigation and ship control functions within an Ethernet network.Each vessel will be equipped with three TotalWatch multifunction workstations, which include ECDIS, navigational radars, GPS positioning, autopilot, steering control and conning information.
