The annual WISTA Hellas Gala Dinner and Award Ceremony took place on December 9, 2024, celebrating exceptional contributions to maritime leadership and service.

According to news, the Canadian-flagged M/V Michipicoten, a 689-foot bulk carrier transporting taconite, was safely escorted to Thunder Bay, Ontario, after experiencing severe flooding in Lake Superior on 8th June.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound introduced a cetacean desk pilot program during a ceremony at Sector Puget Sound. The goal of the four-year pilot program, which is hosted in the Puget Sound Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), is to  to safeguard endangered whales and mitigate adverse impacts of maritime vessel traffic on endangered and threatened large cetaceans (whales) in the Salish Sea.

A cargo ship with 11 crew members aboard sank off the southern island of Jeju, but all individuals were safely rescued, announced the Coast Guard on 16th February 2024.

On 4th October, a Coast Guard boat crew rescued 12 people, after they were forced to abandon the M/V Bonnie G that was taking on water and ran aground just south of the airport in St. Thomas.

On 13th September, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a tanker crew member from the water 10 miles offshore Galveston, Texas.

Last week, on 31st August, U.S. Coast Guard, rescued 18 people from a passenger vessel which ran aground near the Columbia Glacier. 

Four years after the fire aboard the Conception dive boat claimed 34 lives, the National Transportation Safety Board renewed its call for the U.S. Coast Guard to require safety management systems (SMS) for passenger vessels.
