Chemikalien implements DNV GL quality and safety software

As a step toward improving quality and safety systems and easing work for its crew, the German tanker company Chemikalien Seetransport has implemented DNV GL's ShipManager QHSE software across its entire tanker fleet of 40 vessels. The ShipManager QHSE system supports findings and incident reporting, documentation, certificate control, safety task management and direct link into the class survey items and certificates. The software also helps to reduce the administrative burden of relevant shipping industry regulations, such as ISM/ISPS, SOLAS, TMSA, classification rules, vetting inspections, or Port State Control. "We wanted to achieve two things," says Frank Eggert, project manager for the Chemikalien Seetransport implementation. "We wanted to further develop our quality and safety system, and also to ease the work for crew and onboard staff." The ShipManager QHSE is a user-friendly tool known for its capabilities of rapid implementation. The system implemented in the Chemikalien Seetransport fleet also includes DNV GL's ShipManager Analyzer software, for efficient reporting of safety KPIs and statistics. "ShipManager QHSE has modules such as Safety Management Reporting, Documentation, Safety Tasks & Drills and Certificates modules. Chemikalien Seetransport will have a framework for reporting, assessing and following up any incidents, audits and findings. They are also able ...

Marine Response Alliance Launches Fire-Fighting Data App

Marine Response Alliance (MRA), an association of the top U.S. emergency responders providing OPA 90 Salvage Marine Firefighting (SMFF), has launched an exclusive mobile app, providing ship owners/operators, qualified individuals (QIs) and the U.S. Coast Guard with immediate access to the MRA's resources for Salvage Marine Fire Fighting as per OPA 90 compliance as well as the ability to report incidents throughTITAN Salvage (MRA partner) around the world. The OPA 90 SMFF app allows users to report an incident, have direct dial access to worldwide offices, and obtain immediate access to a secure password protected database of registered vessel documents, pre-fire plans and certificates online, which can then be saved in the user's offline documents. The user can review MRA's geographic specific appendices, request drills, see salvage news and receive regulatory updates. "With the OPA 90 SMFF app, the user has easy access to immediate response capabilities anywhere, anytime," said Lindsay Malen, director of business development for MRA and TITAN.  "As a responder the user can download vessel documents while headed to a casualty or the USCG can quickly access the plan holders Funding Agreement to ensure compliance. This is just another way the MRA is making these requirements time ...

First tug in the port of Rotterdam fuelled with synthetic diesel

The Boskalis vessel the SMIT Elbe in the port of Rotterdam has become the first tugboat in the Netherlands to be fuelled with Shell GTL. GTL, which stands for gas-to-liquids, is a liquid fuel made from natural gas converted into synthetic diesel. GTL produces far fewer nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide, fine dust particles and black smoke emissions than regular diesel. The SMIT Elbe will run on GTL for around six months to determine whether the fuel is able to effect a sizeable reduction in emissions without the engines being adapted. On-board emission measurements will be carried out at regular intervals. The pilot may also be interesting in relation to the emission reduction targets for the port of Rotterdam. The pilot is consistent with Boskalis' energy and carbon reduction activities in the Netherlands. Soure & Image Credit: Boskalis
