NGO Clean Arctic Alliance explains the impact of underwater noise on marine life and calls for the International Maritime Organization to tackle the issue. 

As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) gathers today for a meeting of its Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80, July 3-7), the Clean Arctic Alliance called on IMO member states to adopt ambitious interim targets that will lead to a 50% reduction in shipping’s climate impact by 2030.

The Clean Arctic Alliance yesterday called on the IMO to radically reduce the impact of black carbon emissions from shipping on Arctic sea and glacier ice, by putting in place a compulsory requirement for ships across the whole Arctic to use cleaner fuels, by switching to distillate fuels.

The Clean Arctic Alliance welcomed the progress made by the IMO to address the impact of underwater noise from ships on marine wildlife.

The Clean Arctic Alliance called for urgent action to address the impact of underwater noise from ships on Arctic wildlife, as a meeting of IMO’s Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC 9) opens in London from 23 to 27 January.

Following MEPC79 outcome, the Clean Arctic Alliance welcomed progress to reduce the impact of GHGs and black carbon emissions from shipping on the Arctic, but called on IMO member states to act decisively to regulate black carbon emissions.

Responding to media reports that Canada and Russia have written letters to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), stating their reasons for not implementing the 2024 prohibition on heavy fuel oil (HFO), Dr Sian Prior, lead advisor to the Clean Arctic Alliance, raised concerns.

Responding to the EU Parliament voting on the FuelEU Maritime Regulation, Clean Arctic Alliance Lead Advisor Dr Sian Prior, said that it does not protect the Arctic.

The Clean Arctic Alliance has written to the ministers from Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands to propose a number of domestic and international actions which would help to rapidly kick-start the establishment of these green corridors in Arctic waters.
