As the Britannia P&I Club informs, Intertanko has recently received a number of reports from its members regarding uncharted terminals in Chinese ports after a request for feedback. The association has called the Chinese authorities to mitigate the issue. Hydrographic inaccuracies and the non-marking of existing terminals on charts raise serious navigational risks.

US President Donald Trump stated that tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods will increase to 25%, from the current 10%. This move comes after repeated claims by the US government that trade talks with China are progressing smoothly. However, Vice President Mike Pence said that the US President is hopeful that he could reach an agreement with China. 

China officially launched Thursday the International Coalition for Green Development on the Belt and Road, which could serve as an international platform for Chinese and foreign leading agencies to cooperate in research and make recommendations on key issues, as well as facilitate international dialogue.

Russia has turned to China seeking to agree on a collaboration to develop ports as well as other infrastructure in the Arctic. Namely, Russia aspires to partner with China to create a shipping route along the Northern Sea Route. This plan includes the development of new ports and other infrastructure, aiming to to increase cargo shipments across the 'Northern Sea Route'.

Members from China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation held discussions with board members of the Croatian shipbuilding group Uljanik, regarding a potential investment on two financially-troubled shipyards. This happens as the Croatian shipyard has been in financial trouble for months.

China will present its new warships including nuclear submarines and destroyers during a parade next week, as it marks 70 years since its navy’s founding, according to a senior commander. This is considered by many as an indication that China flexes its well-equipped military capabilities. In addition, about a dozen foreign navies will take part in the parade from Russia, Singapore, India, Thailand and Vietnam.

China decided to restrict its coal imports in 2019 in less than 2018's levels. Drewry supports that this decision will dent demand for Panamaxes, but an ongoing tussle with Australia could be the silver lining. The Chinese government aims to curb the coal imports by 3-4% in 2019. This could result to a decline of approximately 10 million tonnes.

German seaports handled 304.7 million tons of seaborne goods during 2018. This is an increase of 1.7%, in comparison to 2017, as the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced in the beginning of this week. In addition, the number of goods which German seaports received from other ports rose by 2%. Moreover, the shipping of goods from German seaports over the world's oceans grew slightly by 1.8%.
