Princess Cruise Ship Allegedly Ignores Fishing Vessel In Distress

Princess Cruises said it was aware of the allegations American-based cruise ship Star Princess allegedly neglected to aid a distressed fishing vessel after passengers on board spotted it adrift at sea, according to reports. On March 10, three bird-watching passengers aboard the Star Princess spotted what looked like a stranded fishing boat in the Pacific, reports NPR."We then used spotting scopes with a fixed tripod and I could see this strange little boat and at least one person standing up waving a piece of cloth high over his head, up and down," passenger Jeff Gilligan told MSNBC. "We could see it was not moving - there were nets pulled on to the boat and apparently no nets in the water. So we soon questioned - is this a stranded, disabled boat, signaling us for help?"Another bird watcher, Judy Meredith, was able to phone up to the ship's bridge with the help of a crew member. However, the ship never turned back like the trio expected. After not hearing back from the Star Princess' crew, Meredith sent the ship's coordinates in an email to a Coast Guard website, to no avail. The three men were meant to be on an overnight fishing trip, ...

Has Carnival’s PR response been too little too late?

How well has Carnival responded to the Concordia disaster? How well has Carnival responded to the Concordia disaster? When the Carnival Splendor caught fire in 2010 with 4,500 people aboard, stranding the vessel off Mexico they were broadly praised for their response but not this time.Confusion over whether 'sail-bys' are standard practise, what some see as an unseemly and potentially dangerous rush to blame the disaster in its entirety on Captain Schettino and accusations of inconsistencies in the compensation payments to different classes of passenger are all damaging the Costa and ultimately the Carnival brand. Should the Cruise industry have been more vocal and proactive in defending what is a very safe way to sail? Are PR company Burston Marsteller steering the right course for the brand?British PR Week explored these issues in their videocast below. Carnival reports cruise bookings down after Costa Concordia accident

The financial impact of the Costa Concordia tragedy In its annual Form 10K filing with the SEC, Carnival Corporation & plc, whose brands, of course, include Costa Cruises, gives more insights into the likely financial impact of the Costa Concordia tragedy."After the incident," says Carnival "we significantly reduced our marketing activities. Excluding Costa, our fleetwide booking volumes, subsequent to the incident through January 25, 2012, declined in the mid-teens compared to the prior year, after bottoming out on January 16, 2012."Costa's booking activity is difficult to interpret because of the significant re-booking activity stemming from the loss of the ship's use and related re-deployments, however we believe it to be down significantly. Despite these recent trends, we believe the incident will not have a significant long-term impact on our business."Carnival says that "as a result of Costa Concordia's incident, we anticipate other financial impacts to our business, including lower net revenue yields, that are not possible to reasonably determine at this time."It says that "in March 2012, we expect to provide revised 2012 full year earnings guidance, including these financial impacts."DAMAGE ASSESSMENTIn the 10K, Carnival notes "the net carrying value of this euro denominated ship, including ship improvements, at December ...
