Transshipment in the North Sea Canal Area at the seaports Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad declined to 49.4 million tonnes in the first half of 2018, a decrease of 5.1%, while the Port of Amsterdam saw transshipment fall by 4.8% to 40.2 million tonnes.

Despite 'clouds on the horizon' in view of tariff and trade war fears, the medium term outlook for global container port demand growth is positive thanks to strong underlying economic momentum across the world’s major economies, said global shipping consultancy Drewry in its latest research.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that cargo volumes in these ports set a new record for the first half of 2018, with volumes up by 6.8% over the same period in 2017, when the previous six-month record was established. Between January and June this year, the port handled 3,450,469 TEUs.

The Georgia Ports Authority announced that it achieved records in total tonnage and twenty-foot equivalent container units handled in Fiscal Year 2018, which ended in June. GPA handled a record 4.2 million TEUs, for 8.4% increase year-over-year, or 325,000 additional units.   

INTERCARGO announced the introduction of a new project, from 1 August 2018, through a reporting scheme “INTERCARGO Bulk Carrier Reporting Form (II) – Safe Loading/Unloading at Anchorage”, in a bid to respond to the increasing issues related to safe loading/unloading at anchorage.

For April until June 2018, nine ports - Kolkata including Haldia, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal (Kandla) Port have registered positive growth in traffic. The highest growth was registered by Kamarajar Port, with 11.93%.

Load shifting is a commonly dangerous situation for ships carrying solid cargo, bulk cargo ships and containerships.  A good seamanship and compliance to safety regulations while loading or trimming, are some of the factors that should be considered before operations start.

The responsibilities of the shipowner and the charterer in an unamended time charterparty, such as NYPE, are usually clearly stated and understood. However, sometimes, charterers try to add clauses, in order to transfer responsibility for cargo operations onto the shipowner. North P&I Club addresses this issue.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has signed partnership agreements with four participants in the annual PortXL innovation programme. Namely, the Port agreed with Tulyp Wind, CargoLedger, ECOncrete, and WhaleWashing to establish pilot projects that are expected to have an impact on the port.

Terminal Industry Committee 4.0 will describe definitions about concepts and technical terminology relevant to the container handling industry. It will include sub groups initially dealing with safety, performance of equipment, telemetric, energy, environment and procurement related definitions, in order to establish standards definitions.
