In the first semester of 2019, Zeebrugge recorded a 12.5 % growth, compared to the same period in 2018. Namely, a total cargo volume of 21,883,578 tonnes was handled, while container traffic decreased by 2.2% to 7,548,076 tonnes. Regarding port shifts, they increased by 3% to 181,130 shifts, with 71 cruise vessels moored in Zeebrugge.

International Container Terminal Services Inc. informed that it initiated a rail cargo service between Karachi and Lahore in Pakistan, aiming to enable faster movements of products in its Middle Eastern port. The new rail service is also expected to cut significantly costs to upcountry markets.

Sharing figures for the first half of 2019, Finland's Port of Helsinki informed that its passenger numbers have bounced back to last year’s level, but the amount of cargo transported via the Port during the first half of the year did not reach last year’s level.

APM Terminals announced the introduction of a customer platform that logs, streamlines and coordinate general cargo operations in the port of Callao, a first of its kind in a Peruvian port. During the pilot phase, the platform enabled users to complete transactions 67% faster.

Pilbara Ports Authority has delivered a total annual throughput of 697.2 million tonnes (Mt) for the 2018/19 financial year. This result constitutes less than 1% change, namely a decrease of 2.06 million tonnes, from last year’s record annual throughput.

Ports in Qatar handled 218,330 tonnes of building materials from January to June 2019, in comparison to 177,000 tonnes in the same period last year. These numbers show a growth of around 24%. The ports received about 661,331 containers in the first half of 2019, up by 2.% compared to the same period.

Mexico is considering to upgrade the Port of Manzanillo with four new terminals. The Mexican government expects to collect about USD 1.2 billion from public and private entities, in order to fund the expansion project. The new terminals will feature a specialized container facility, which will have the capacity to handle 1.75 million TEUs per year, one for agricultural bulk, another for mineral bulk and a specialized facility for hydrocarbons.

When informed that wet or damaged cargo has been found in a hold, the Master's initial actions can do a lot to help their position and can even help in defending or reducing liabilities. For this reason, the North P&I Club describes the Master’s role in mitigating cargo claims.

The Container Owners Association published a 'Guide to Container Tracking and Telematics Technology', providing container operators, leasing companies and other interested stakeholders with an overview of the technology issues that they might experience, and the choices that are available to them.

Since the start in the beginning of 2018, over 100,000 containers have been transported via the Intercity Barge shuttle service. With the Intercity Barge, customers can pick up and deliver their containers at the location of their choice. The Intercity Barge uses fixed windows at the ECT terminals, offering a sustainable and efficient transport.
