In a recent statement, Eastern Pacific has announced its first class of nine startups for the Eastern Pacific Accelerator powered by Techstars, which were selected from hundreds of worldwide applicants. The class of startups was selected with careful consideration and input from EPS’ Operations, Marine Technical, Commercial, IT, Fleet Personnel, and Management teams, who would work closely with each startup to test their technologies and accelerate their businesses.

Bullying and harassment, including sexual harassment, is an abuse of human rights and a key area of concern for the working environment, especially onboard ships where there is limited alternative for someone to avoid it. This aspect of abuse is particularly important for women, as it is considered one of the reasons keeping them away from a shipping career.

The inaugural SAFETY4SEA Manila Forum was successfully concluded on Tuesday 12th of November 2019 at New World Manila Bay Hotel, Philippines, attracting 350 delegates from 120 organizations. Discussions varied among key challenges affecting the industry, with a special focus on the hot issue of attracting new generations and diversified talents in the maritime industry which is struggling to cope with the reforms brought by accelerating technology and remain productive and efficient.

The awards were presented at a prestigious ceremony which successfully concluded on November the 8th, on the sidelines of EUROPORT, the leading international exhibition that took place in Rotterdam, November 5-8, 2019.

Automation, soft skills and CSR are said to be three key focus areas for industry’s workforce, as shipping accelerates its path towards the smart era and a more sustainable future. Notably, automation will incur a fundamental transformation in the way seafarers work, replacing partly the human element and having an impact on the skills operators will be looking for.

The Ghana Maritime Authority together with the Women in Shipping and Trade Association (WISTA Ghana) have met with girls from secondary schools in the Accra Metropolis, aiming to educate and inspire them to take advantage of career opportunities within the industry.

Increasing the number of seafarers by boosting job potential will be one of the priority areas for the Indian Ministry of Shipping, said Minister Mansukhlal Mandaviya while speaking to local media, Tuesday. India is now one of the top suppliers for seafarers worldwide.

In line with IMO's World Maritime Day theme for 2019 'Empowering Women in the Maritime Community', ABS issued a video depicting few of the organization's female leaders discussing career advice for women pursuing a career in the maritime industry.

England-based charity Seafarers UK and Sea Cadets charity launched the next phase of their joint Marine Engineering Pathway schools project, aiming to engage young people across the UK in learning more about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and to think about a future in marine engineering.

On the sidelines of ​Nor-Shipping exhibition last week in Oslo, IMO hosted a special event to highlight some of the challenges and the solutions around encouraging women to take up seafaring roles. This comes in line with IMO's enhanced efforts during the last year to empower women in the maritime community.
