The leaders of Canada and Germany signed a green hydrogen deal establishing a path for a transatlantic supply chain as Europe seeks to lessen its dependence on Russian energy.

Canada's Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra, alongside Mike Kelloway, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso, announced over $384 million in funding to strengthen marine safety as part of the next phase of Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan.

An engine room fire broke out on the Canadian ferry Holiday Island on 22 July, with the crew safely evacuating all passengers, while also keeping the fire contained.

Several marine groups responded to reports of a sinking boat off central Vancouver Island on July 11. A sheen was also reported.

Canada published a bulletin to describe vessel requirements for the Protection of the Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) in the Waters of Southern British Columbia, 2022, which came into force June 01, 2022. The Interim Order applies to all vessels that are navigating in, on or through specific waters in Southern British Columbia, regardless of the method of propulsion.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has released its investigation report on a March 2019 berthing incident involving the roll-on/roll-off ferry Apollo in Matane, Quebec.

TSB Canada published its report on the 1 December 2020 incident, where while the crew on the bulk carrier Blue Bosporus were carrying out a free‑fall lifeboat drill at Anchorage 12 in English Bay, British Columbia, the wire rope slings holding the lifeboat failed and it fell approximately 14m to the water. 

Transport Canada confirms that COVID-19 vaccines approved in Canada continue to be available to foreign seafarers.  

Canada published a bulletin explaining the requirements of section 24 of the Ballast Water Regulations (BWR), which addressees the way in which the master of a vessel that is bound for a port, offshore terminal or anchorage area in Canada must submit duly completed Ballast Water Reporting Form (BWRF).

Canada is poised to send cargo ships to ports in Romania and neighbouring countries to help Ukraine get its wheat to Africa and the Middle East.
