Transport Canada outlined measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 onboard essential passenger vessels and ferries. These practices must be implemented by essential passenger vessels and ferries that continue to operate, under restrictions, during the pandemic.

In its transportation statistics 2020, TSB Canada recorded a total of 262 marine accidents (resulting directly from the operation of a ship), down from the 2019 total of 267 and below the 10-year average of 289. In 2020, the proportion of shipping accidents was 84% of marine accidents, comparable to the previous 10-year average of 82%.

Transport Canada shared guidance on how to comply with domestic regulations for transporting oil, fuels, and oil or fuel by-products, such as waste oil. The guidance is intended for authorized representatives, owners and operators, masters and crew of oil tankers and vessels carrying oil and fuels in tanks on deck (including cargo barges), and suppliers and receivers of oil and fuels.

Canada’s Chamber of Marine Commerce has criticized the ballast regulations by Transport Canada which took effect earlier in June, claiming that the BWMSs do not meet the demands of domestic trading patterns.

For the second year in a row, the majority of vessels are not complying with a voluntary slowdown aiming to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales in the Cabot Strait, the conservation group Oceana Canada has found, calling Transport Canada to do all it can to protect right whales by making the slowdown mandatory.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) issued its investigation report on the bottom contact of the passenger ferry 'Deer Island Princess II' near Letete, New Brunswick, in February 2018, determining that common safety hazards, such as extremely low tides, had not been identified and mitigated by the operator of the vessel.
