The US Coast Guard's Marine Safety Center issued an updated Type Approval certificate to Sunrui Environmental Engineering, for their filtration/side-stream electrolysis BalClor Ballast Water Management System. The updated certificate was issued to clarify the hazardous location installation requirements onboard foreign flag vessels.

On the occasion of UN Ocean Conference, ICS issued a report, focusing on the multi-faced commitments of the shipping industry for the implementation of a sustainable strategy towards the ocean. ICS believes that unless the shipping industry is commercially viable, it will not be able to deliver the investments in environmental and social improvements.

Coldharbour Marine signed an agreement with Hansun (Shanghai) Marine Technology, covering the marketing and distribution of its products in mainland China. US Senate approved last week a new bill which includes a provision eliminating US EPA’s authority over ballast water pollution and at the same time ‘rolling back rules that protect the Great Lakes from invasive species’, the Alliance for the Great Lakes stated.

West of England P&I Club informed that the implementation of the new ballast water regulations in Argentina, as published on April, has been suspended, according to the Club's representatives. Until the authorities review the regulations, a suspension was decided due to the general complaints of the shipping industry and the lack of clarity.

The North P&I Club says that US is ‘getting tough’ on Ballast Water extension. USCG officers focus on BWM compliance issues during their routing PSC inspections. The Club advises that all ships calling at US ports and intending to discharge ballast water must either carry out ballast water exchange or treatment, in addition to fouling and sediment management.

The Liberian Maritime Authority issued a Marine Note, in order to remind operators that, after the BWM Convention entering into force on 8 September 2017, existing ships, to which the BWM Convention applies, shall have an approved Ballast Water Management Plan, Ballast Water Record Book and carry on board a valid International Ballast Water Management Certificate.

On April 19th, the California State Lands Commission issued a letter to inform about its new rules on ballast water management that will take effect in the State of California on 1 July 2017.

Evoqua Water Technologies announced that is upgrading its SeaCURE® system production facility in Caldicot, Wales, to meet market demand for ballast water treatment systems and shipowners requirement to comply with the entry into force of the Ballast Water Management Convention, this coming September.
