Finnish technology group Wärtsilä announced it will supply the engines, the navigation system, and a broad scope of other products and systems for a new environmentally friendly ferry being built for the Finland-based Viking Line. The ship is being built at the Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry yard in China.

The Liberian Registry recently co-hosted a round-table discussion with the U.S. Coast Guard and twelve shipping companies to debate topical issues relating to ballast water.

The new system is not an in-line process, but an in-voyage process, so there are no filters and no potential problems relating to flow rates, pressure drops, or power consumption during ballasting. The solution is considered appropriate for bulk carriers because it addresses stability issues specific to the ship type.

USCG Marine Safety Center issued Type Approval Certificate to ERMA FIRST ESK Engineering Solutions S.A. for its BWTS consisting of a three step process (filtration and electrolysis during uptake, and neutralization at discharge) The Greek manufacturer is the fifth to receive USCG type approval.
