The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center received its 15th application for type approval for the HiBallast Ballast Water Management System, manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. So far, Techcross (Republic of Korea), Optimarin (Norway), Alfa Laval (Sweden), TeamTec Ocean Saver (Norway), Sunrui (China), Ecochlor (USA) and Erma First (Greece) have won the USCG type approval.

The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the seventh Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to Techcross, for its Electro-Cleen BWMS. So far, Techcross (Republic of Korea), Optimarin (Norway), Alfa Laval (Sweden), TeamTec Ocean Saver (Norway), Sunrui (China), Ecochlor (USA) and Erma First (Greece) have won the USCG type approval.

USCG announced that the Marine Safety Center received its 14th application for Ballast Water Management System type approval for the OceanGuard BWMS manufactured by Headway Technology. On 9 April, the USCG received its 13th application for the Aquarius EC system, manufactured by Wärtsilä Water Systems.

Mr. Mark Hadfield, CEO, Flow Water Technologies, addressed the subject of ballast water treatment which is one of those subjects that whenever it is brought up, ship operators tend to avoid, he commented. This is due to the enormous space required for the installation of a BWMS and the many regulations concerning its application.

During his presentation at GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Peter Sahlén, R&D Manager, PureBallast, Alfa Laval, talked about the route to IMO G8 revised guidelines (2016) and USCG type approval. Providing a recap of how the new robust 2016 G8 testing guidelines were adopted, he cited what are the new conditions and informed about the IMO revised G8 Certificate.

The US Marine Safety Center posted the updated Frequently Asked Questions to its Ballast Water Management Type Approval Management webpage. These FAQs, as of April 24, 2018, are updated regularly to help the ballast water community better understand and navigate the type approval process.

The manufacturers and stakeholders in the ballast water treatment equipment market have created a unified manufacturers’ association. The Ballast water Equipment Manufacturers’ Association aims to address issues regarding ballast water treatment technologies, and provide information on implementing ballast water management regulations worldwide.

The inaugural SAFETY4SEA Conference in Cyprus successfully concluded on Tuesday 17th of April, at Columbia Plaza in Limassol, attracting 220 delegates from a total of 115 organizations. In its PSC Annual Report for 2017, USCG revealed an annual detention rate of 0.99%, the lowest ever in the US, unveiling however an increase in detentions related to fire fighting and MARPOL Annex I deficiencies. The report also informed that deficiencies related to BWM compliance significantly increased in this period.
