IMO MEPC 81 adopted amendments to regulations A-1 and B-2 of the BWM Convention concerning the use of electronic record books, expected to enter into force on 1 October 2025, and further focused on the implementation and Convention review.

Australia has presented a study to IMO MEPC 81 evaluating the efficiency of ballast water management systems (BWMS) concerning the BWM Convention. The study revealed non-compliance in 36% (16) of the detailed tests for biological compliance.

Lloyd’s Register published a statutory alert, in which highlights that the IMO has released BWM.2/Circ.80 – Guidance on ballast water record-keeping and reporting.

The 80th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), 3-7 July 2023, approved amendments to the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention. 

The 80th session of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) will take place from 3-7 July 2023, and the entire maritime industry is holding its breath in anticipation as the MEPC is expected to adopt an upgraded IMO greenhouse gas (GHG) Strategy.

In its annual Port State Control (PSC) report for 2022 released in late April, the US Coast Guard noted that compliance with ballast water management regulations continues to be one of the most challenging issues faced by the maritime industry.

The IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 10), 24-28 April 2023, agreed to a draft Protocol for verification of ballast water compliance monitoring devices, to be submitted to MEPC 80 for approval. 

MEPC 79 established a Ballast Water Review Group to consider a number of matters with regards to the Ballast Water Management Convention.
