The new regulation will enter into force on 1 January 2014 The Republic of the Marshall Islands has issued Marine Safety Advsory No.73 to provide an update on the prohibition of blending MARPOL cargoes on board during sea voyage. The Maritime Safety Committee hasfinally adopted, during its 90thsession, resolution MSC.325(90) by which a new SOLASregulation prohibits the blending of bulk liquid cargoes and production processes during seavoyages. The new regulation will enter into force on 1 January 2014 and adds the following textafter the existing regulation 5-1 of SOLAS Chapter VI:Regulation 5-2 - Prohibition of the blending of bulk liquid cargoes and production processesduring sea voyages 1 The physical blending of bulk liquid cargoes during sea voyages is prohibited. Physicalblending refers to the process whereby the ship's cargo pumps and pipelines are used tointernally circulate two or more different cargoes with the intent to achieve a cargo with a newproduct designation. IACS Council adopts new harmonised Common Structural Rules

At its 68th session of the IACS Council meeting, held on 18-19 December in London IACS has unanimously adopted new harmonised Common Structural Rules (CSR) for oil tankers and bulk carriers. The new rules will apply to all oil tankers over 150 m and bulk carriers over 90 m in length contracted for construction on or after 1 July 2015.The CSR will be presented to the IMO which will verify their compliance with the IMO GBS that will be compulsory for new building contracts signed on or after 1 July 2016.Mr Cazzulo, Chairman of the IACS Council, said "This is a historic achievement and the culmination of many years of hard work by technical specialists from all member societies and intensive and continuing consultation with industry and authorities at every stage. Together we have invested a huge amount of time and money to develop these rules."Among the main benefits of the new CSR: ship designers will be able to work to one common standard applicable to both ship types; more comprehensive structural analyses including FEM calculations covering fore and aft parts; new rule checks including new buckling, fatigue and ultimate strength criteria; all this will enhance safety and reliability of ...

DNV GL, SDARI introduce new bulk carrier concept

The Green Dolphin 575 concept design for a handymax bulk carrier DNV GL and Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) have introduced the Green Dolphin 575 concept design for a handymax bulk carrier. This second design builds on the success of the handysize Green Dolphin 38 for which around 80 orders have been placed with the major share to DNV GL class. Green Dolphin 575 aims to be fuel and energy efficient, robust and reliable, operationally flexible and able to meet current and future environmental regulations. It uses technologies that are already available for commercial use, so it can meet ship owners' current needs in tight market conditions. The Green Dolphin 575 is a 190m long Common Structural Rules (CSR) compliant handymax bulk carrier with five cargo holds. It is available in single hull standard or double-hull (open hatch) configurations. The Green Dolphin 575 is a 190m long Common Structural Rules (CSR) compliant handymax bulk carrier with five cargo holds. It is available in single hull standard or double-hull (open hatch) configurations.Similar to the Green Dolphin 38, the hull is designed to achieve optimal fuel efficiency without compromising on strength and operational flexibility. New for this project is that the ...
