Do you know how many types of ships exist?

There is a wide range of different vessels. The international dry cargo and tanker markets are immense and are served by numerous ships of several types and of various sizes. Some of them follow standard designs and can carry a variety of cargoes while others are more specialized and able to carry commodities which the standard vessels cannot. According to the UNCTAD, in early 2019 the total world fleet stood at 95,402 ships accounting for 1.97 billion dead-weight tons (dwt) of capacity.

Grounded bulker in St. Lawrence Seaway now refloated

After the Canadian-flagged self discharging bulk carrier ‘RT Honorable Paul Martin’ ran aground on the American side of the St. Lawrence Seaway, on 6 October, it has now been refloated and anchored outside of the port of Johnstown, Ontario. The ship is now waiting for repairs.

The Shanghai Shipping Exchange reported that China’s coastal bulk freight market has seen a decrease in general demand, analysing the index of coastal bulk freight, coal sub-index, metal ore sub-index, and refined oil products index, according to Xinhua.

Lifeboat from missing bulk carrier found off Indonesia

Search and rescue teams have discovered signs of the missing bulk carrier ‘Nur Allya’, almost two weeks after the ship disappeared off eastern Indonesia, along wits its 25 crew. Local media report that a lifeboat belonging to the ship has been found, while an oil sheen has been discovered in the area.

Bulk carrier with 25 crew disappears off east Indonesia

Search and rescue operations are underway for the Indonesian-flagged bulk carrier ‘Nur Allya’, which has been missing along with its 25 crew members, after sending a distress signal in waters off eastern Indonesia on Sunday. The ship was carrying nickel ore to Southeast Sulawesi province.
