High risk routes for drug smuggling

North informs that recent incidents of criminals using cargo ships to smuggle narcotics have highlighted specific routes that are being targeted by smugglers. Namely, one route is Barranquilla to Altamira, as there has been a notable increase in the finding of cocaine on vessels trading from Colombia to Mexico. In most of the cases, bulk carriers have been targeted. The drugs, in the form of packaged cocaine were buried within the cargo and were only discovered during discharge operations.

Robber steals fuel from bulk carrier at Caofeidian Anchorage, China

A robber attacked and stole fuel from a bulk carrier that was anchored at China’s Caofeidian Anchorage, on February 10. Namely, the duty officer on board the ship notice that a hose was connected from a tank. The alarm was raised and the robber lowered the hose and escaped. It was reported that DO had been stolen and the incident was reported to VTS Caofeidian.

Several scenarios possible around the bulk carrier explosion off Yemen

Turkish shipping company Ince Shipping Group confirmed that the explosion onboard the bulk carrier ‘Ince Inebolu’ off the port of Saleef, Yemen, last week, was caused by a missile attack. The ship was anchored 70 miles off Saleef, just north of the port of Hodeidah on the Red Sea, and awaiting permission to offload cargo in the port. 

Libyan forces intercept Greek bulk carrier

The Greek bulk carrier “Santorini” was intercepted by Libyan forces on Monday, 11 of March 11 in Libyan waters off Susah, for allegedly sailing into Libyan waters, and especially the waters off Derna, without having been granted authorization to do so. The ship had 21 crewmembers including Turkish and Syrian nationalities.

Armed robbers board bulk carrier, stab bosun

Two robbers armed with knives boarded a bulk carrier, while anchored at Godau Port, Vietnam, on 31st of January, according to data provided by IMB. The robbers took the bosun hostage, threatened and injured him with a knife and then tied him up.

Pirates attack Greek bulk carrier in Nigeria

The ship was heading to Port Harcourt from Lagos when it was attacked, with the pirates being in control of the ship for about an hour. According to sources, among the crewmembers kidnapped are the master of ‘Skylight’ and senior officers. The crew members that remained on the vessel managed to guide the ship to Port Harcourt.
