Nearly a fifth of the world’s entire ocean floor has now been mapped, experts say, as plans are progressing despite the challenges of COVID-19 crisis. Charting seabed aims to help understand the impact oceans have on the earth’s climate.

During the 2020 SAFETY4SEA Limassol Forum, Giampiero Soncini, Marine Division – Chief Executive Officer, IB Marine, focused on fuel management on board ships, commenting that efficient fuel monitoring can be achieved through digitalization. Sharing the strengths of digitalizing onboard data, he concluded that fuel performance is different in theory and in practice, given that the majority of vessels are old, and that digitalization needs planning in order to be effective.

During the 2020 SMART4SEA Athens Forum, Mr. Mike Konstantinidis, CEO, METIS Cyberspace Technology, addressed in brief the necessity for the digital transformation in the maritime, as well as the contribution of smart technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in the development of a new era in shipping.

The National University of Singapore Engineering collaborated with the Keppel Data Centres Holdings Pte Ltd and Singapore LNG Corporation to develop a technology that can efficiently store and carry cold energy from the Singapore LNG Terminal to various data centres. This solution aims to open the way for more sustainable and compact data centres.

A Japanese consortium is to provide new infrastructure services with a focus on electric vessels. Their newly established company, called e5 Lab., will work to develop and promote the greater use of these clean modes of marine transport by building the world's first zero-emission tanker by mid 2021.
