Port of Amsterdam announced launch of a floating battery service to bring mobile stored power into the port and inner city of Amsterdam. The battery, which is placed on a barge and powered by local, renewable energy, will help balance the electricity grid.

Turkish shipyard 'Cemre' informed that it launched Libas, the world's first battery & LNG driven purse seiner/trawler. The launching of the vessel took place on the 7th of February. After the completion, Cemre is planning to deliver the vessel in Q2, 2020.

On 8 January, the United European Car Carriers (UECC), jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines announced its first steel cutting ceremony at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, for their battery hybrid LNG powered vessel "PCTC".

In collaboration with the Norwegian, Danish and US maritime authorities, battery manufacturers, system integrators, suppliers of fire extinguishing systems, shipyards and shipowners, DNV GL published a new report on battery safety in ships. The report analyzes explosion and fire risks in maritime battery installations and the effectiveness of fire extinguishing systems in case of a battery fire.

MOL and e5 Lab are collaborating to develop and promote electrically powered zero emission vessels. As such, they have concluded to a Memorandum Of Understanding (MoU), to perform a joint study of a hybrid pure car carrier equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell system and large-capacity batteries (hydrogen hybrid PCC).  

USCG's Office of Design and Engineering Standards (CG-ENG) issued CG-ENG Policy Letter No. 02-19, “Design Guidance for Lithium-Ion Battery Installations Onboard Commercial Vessels” to improve the plan approval process for commercial vessel propulsion or electrical systems powered by installed Lithium-ion batteries.

A containerized 600 kWh marine battery system will be equipped in a trial on board the Maersk Cape Town in December 2019 to improve ship performance and reliability while at the same time reducing CO2 emissions. The battery system will be shortly transported to Singapore and installed on board the Maersk Cape Town.

UECC announced that it has confirmed an option with China Ship Building Trading Co., Ltd and Jiangnan Shipyard Group Co. Ltd. for a third battery hybrid LNG vessel. The ship is expected to operate in UECC’s Atlantic short sea trade.

Engineers from MAN, Braemar Technical Services along with additional four maritime companies are developing a zero-emissions superyacht, which will consist of an all-of-the-above selection of green technology. The team behind this, look towards a zero emissions upon weight savings. 

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) announced that it is promoting ways of reducing carbon emissions in the marine environment as part of its strategic theme of environmental sustainability. As IMCA said, the contribution of battery technologies in cutting carbon emissions is now having a positive effect in the offshore marine construction market.
