On 2nd August, container ship MTT Singapore, ran aground onto right bank of Hugli river while sailing upstream in India.

After Bangladesh and Liberia ratified the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (the Hong Kong Convention), it is now expected to enter into force.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), has expressed their congratulations to Bangladesh on its accession to Hong Kong ship recycling convention. 

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) welcomes the leadership shown by principal ship recycling country Bangladesh for agreeing to ratify the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention).

BIMCO has launched its fourth industry film, calling for the urgent adoption of the Hong Kong International Convention for the safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, and for ship owners to only choose yards that live up to the convention.

ECSA (European Community Shipowners' Associations) has released a statement to warmly welcome the Bangladeshi authorities' decision to ratify the Hong Kong Convention. 

During a visit to Bangladesh by Norwegian authorities, the Norwegian Shipping Association, the European Community Shipowners’ Association, the International Chamber of Shipping and BIMCO, between 8-11 May 2023, the Bangladesh Government confirmed that the country will ratify the Hong Kong Convention.
