According to Reuters, the Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index showed a decrease, as continued reaching its lowest level since April 2016, impacted by weaker vessels rates across categories.  

As Reuters reports, the Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index reached its lowest level in April 2019, impacted by falling rates across the capesize and panamax segments. The tracks rates concerning capesize, panamax and supramax vessels ferrying dry bulk commodities, dropped 25 points, or 3.3%, to 729.

The Baltic Exchange issued its data concerning the freight derivatives markets for both tankers and dry cargo vessel, informing of an increase in trade volumes for 2019, in comparison with the previous years which experienced swings.

According to Reuters, the Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index showed a decrease on ships transferring dry bulk commodities because of the lower demand for capesize vessels. Specifically, the Baltic Index which shows the rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels experienced a decline by 51 points, equal to 2.9%, to 1,731.

On 20 June 2019 the US pulled back from retaliatory military strikes against Iran, after Iran's targeting of a US drone allegedly operating in Iranian airspace. This came after a series of attacks on vessels in the Gulf of Oman area, most recently on the Front Altair and the Kokuka Courageous. For this reason, Jean Koh, Daniel Martin and Isabel Phillips, HFW, advise brokers to consider their shipowners' and charterers' rights while operating in this tense climate.

Freight derivative volumes in the tanker market rose by 20% in 2018 hitting 321,962 lots, volumes in the dry market rose 1.4% to 1,196,929 lots, its strongest performance since 2008, while dry options volumes rose by 44% to 268,976 lots, finding similar levels to 2016, according to Baltic Exchange.

At a recent meeting in London at the Baltic Exchange, the world's leading associations for the world port community gathered to set out a Roundtable aiming to establish a stronger voice of the port sector in the maritime industry. Each association analyzed its main priorities moving ahead with all parties and agreed to collaborate closely on current and new projects.
