At a ceremony last night at the London Hilton Hotel, Chief Operating Officer Ioannis Kourmatzis accepted the award on behalf of DNV.When nominating, DNV chose Triality as its candidate among several innovation projects. Triality is a crude oil tanker concept that is fuelled by liquefied natural gas, has a hull shape that removes the need for ballast water and will reduce considerably emission to air.London-based Lloyd's List is the only global shipping newspaper with a daily circulation and is the world's oldest continuously published newspaper. An honour for its sustainable and environmentally conscious conduct Hamburg Süd has again been honoured for its sustainable and environmentally conscious conduct. First, in late July 2011, it received the Air Quality Award from the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Group (backed by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach). Just a few days later, it was the Gulf Guardian Award of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).The EPA conferred the Gulf Guardian Award on Hamburg Süd in the Binational category within the context of the Gulf of Mexico Programme because the shipping company had participated voluntarily in measures aimed at reducing emissions in the Gulf of Mexico. In these trials, Hamburg Süd called at the ports of Veracruz, Altamira and Houston with its container ship "Cap San Lorenzo" using Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil (LSMGO), which has a sulphur content of 0.1 per cent.With the Air Quality Award, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach recognised innovative measures helping to reduce emissions and lower air pollution. In connection with the awarding of the 2011 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea In connection with the IMO Council session last week, a panel decided to award the crew on board Charlotte Mærsk a diploma for special recognition of the brave efforts made during a fire on board their ship in 2010.The recognition was given in connection with the awarding of the 2011 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea.On 7 July 2010, a fire broke out on board Charlotte Mærsk, which had a cargo of 4142 containers on board, 45 nautical miles off the Malaysian coast. The fire arose in a container with dangerous goods, and the fire developed explosively. Soon it became clear to the crew that the fire was serious and presented a risk of spreading to, among other things, a container with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).It was considered abandoning the ship, but the crew decided to fight the fire themselves and thereby contributed greatly to extinguishing the fire. Dedicated to the Master of the chemical tanker Samho Jewelry The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has unanimously endorsed the decision of a Panel of Judges that the 2011 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea should go to Captain Seog Hae-gyun of the Republic of Korea, Master of the chemical tanker Samho Jewelry.Captain Seog was nominated by the Government of the Republic of Korea for his heroic actions to keep his vessel and crew safe, while suffering vicious assaults, following a hijack by pirates off the coast of Somalia.The Council agreed that Captain Seog displayed truly extraordinary bravery and concern for his crew after his ship was hijacked in the Indian Ocean in January 2011, going far beyond the call of duty, at great risk and danger to himself. With the pirates onboard, Captain Seog steered the vessel away from the Somali coast, watered down the fuel to prevent combustion, pretended the steering gear was not working properly and reduced the vessels speed.He also managed, surreptitiously, to communicate information to naval forces, which facilitated a dramatic raid by commandos from the Republic of Koreas destroyer Choi Young.
